Running Pace Calculator
Work out your running pace per kilometre and mile, plus your speed, from a distance and time.
Last reviewed July 1, 2026
Whether you're training for a 5K or a marathon, pace is the number that matters. This calculator turns any distance and time into your pace per kilometre and per mile, plus your speed — so you know exactly how fast you ran or need to run.
Enter the distance you covered and the time it took, and see your pace instantly. Great for checking a training run or planning a race target.
The Running Pace formula
Pace = Time ÷ Distance · Speed = Distance ÷ TimeTime = total time taken · Distance = distance covered. Pace is usually expressed as minutes per kilometre or mile; speed as km/h or mph. The two are reciprocals of each other.
Worked example
Run 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is 50 ÷ 10 = 5:00 per km (about 8:03 per mile), and your speed is 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 12 km/h.
Pace vs. speed
Pace is time per unit of distance (like 5:00 per km) — the way runners usually think. Speed is distance per unit of time (like 12 km/h) — the way a treadmill displays it. This calculator shows both so you can switch between them easily.
To hit a race-time goal, divide your target time by the distance to find the pace you need to hold. For example, a sub-25-minute 5K needs a pace just under 5:00/km.
Frequently asked questions
▶How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. This calculator does it for you and shows the pace per kilometre and per mile, plus speed in km/h and mph.
▶What is a good running pace?
It depends entirely on fitness and distance. A common recreational 5K pace is around 6:00–7:00 per km; competitive runners go much faster. Focus on improving your own pace over time.
▶How do I convert pace between km and miles?
One mile is about 1.609 km, so pace per mile is roughly pace per km × 1.609. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03 per mile. This calculator shows both automatically.
▶What pace do I need to finish a race in a target time?
Divide your target time by the distance. For a sub-2-hour half marathon (21.1 km) you need 120 ÷ 21.1 ≈ 5:41 per km.
▶What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (minutes per km or mile); speed is distance per time (km/h or mph). They're inverses — a faster runner has a lower pace but a higher speed.
▶How do I convert my pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per km to get km/h. A 5:00/km pace (5 minutes) is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h.
