The result shows net geometry, an editable allowance, bulk cubic yards and metres, and a whole-bag count based on the package volume you enter. Bag volume stays editable because products and markets use different package sizes.
The Mulch formula
Net volume = length × width × depth · order volume = net volume × (1 + allowance% ÷ 100) · bags = ceiling(order ft³ ÷ labeled ft³ per bag)Dimensions are converted before multiplication · 1 yd³ = 27 ft³ exactly · bag yield is entered from the applicable package.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 9 ft bed at 3 in deep has a net volume of 27 ft³. With 10% allowance, plan for 29.7 ft³ or 1.1 yd³. Using 2 ft³ bags gives 14.85 bags, which rounds up to 15 whole bags.
Assumptions, rounding, and limitations
Assumptions
- The bed is a rectangle with a uniform average finished mulch depth.
- The entered allowance is applied to net geometric volume.
- The entered bag yield is labeled volume per bag, not bag weight.
- Whole bags are purchasable units and therefore round upward.
Rounding: Volume and the exact bag quotient retain full floating-point precision. Displays use up to three decimals; only whole bags round upward.
Limitations
- Does not prescribe horticultural depth or account for existing mulch, settling, grade changes, curved outlines, trunks, plant crowns, drainage, or supplier minimums.
- Package count is only valid for the entered labeled volume; weight-based bags require a product-specific density conversion not modeled here.

Depth turns surface area into a material volume
A bed can have the same square footage but require very different mulch quantities at 1 inch, 3 inches, or 8 centimetres deep. The calculator converts depth into the same base unit as length and width before multiplying.
One cubic yard equals exactly 27 cubic feet. Metric conversions use the exact international-foot relationship published in NIST conversion guidance rather than a rounded cubic-yard shortcut.
Use the label for bags and the supplier for bulk orders
The whole-bag result divides order volume by the entered cubic feet per bag and rounds upward. Copy that volume from the exact package; the 2 ft³ default is only a reproducible example.
For bulk delivery, use the cubic-yard or cubic-metre result and check the supplier's minimum increment. Settling, uneven grade, existing mulch, plant crowns, trunks, and local horticultural guidance remain outside this geometric estimate.
