Tipping customs vary by country, so use the percentage that fits where you are: around 15–20% is common in the US, while in much of Europe and Asia a smaller amount or none at all is normal.
The Tip formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100); Total = Bill + Tip; Per person = Total ÷ PeopleBill = the pre-tip amount · Tip% = the gratuity rate you choose · People = the number sharing the bill.
Worked example
A $80 bill with a 18% tip adds 80 × 0.18 = $14.40, for a $94.40 total. Split between 4 people that's 94.40 ÷ 4 = $23.60 each.
How much should you tip?
In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 20%+ for great service. In the UK and much of Europe, service is sometimes included; if not, rounding up or ~10% is common. In Japan and some other countries, tipping isn't customary at all.
For large groups, restaurants often add a service charge automatically — check the bill before adding a tip on top so you don't pay twice.

Multiply the bill by 0.15 or 0.20. On a $60 bill that's $9 at 15% or $12 at 20%. A quick trick for 20% is to take 10% (move the decimal one place) and double it.
▶Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not quite. A service charge is added by the restaurant automatically, often for large groups, while a tip is discretionary. If a service charge is already on the bill, you usually don't need to tip again.
▶Should I tip on delivery or takeaway?
Customs vary. Delivery drivers are commonly tipped a smaller flat amount or around 10%, while counter takeaway is often not tipped at all. Use whatever percentage fits your situation above.
