Estimate drywall for one or more equal rectangular surfaces while keeping openings, layer count, waste, and panel size visible. Surface and sheet dimensions can use different units, so metric walls can be compared directly with imperial panels.

The result shows net surface area, coverage across every layer, explicit waste, sheet face area, the exact sheet quotient, and a whole-sheet purchasing count. It is an area estimate rather than a framing or installation layout.

The Drywall formula

Net surface = (length × height × equal surfaces) − exclusions · layer coverage = net surface × layers · order area = layer coverage × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)

Sheets = ceiling(order ft² ÷ sheet face ft²); surface and sheet dimensions are converted before comparison.

Worked example

Four 12 ft × 8 ft walls have 384 ft² gross area. Subtracting 64 ft² of openings leaves 320 ft². One layer plus 10% waste requires 352 ft², exactly 11 sheets at 4 ft × 8 ft.

Assumptions, rounding, and limitations

Assumptions

  • Each counted surface is an equal rectangle.
  • Excluded area is a combined total inside the gross surfaces.
  • Every counted layer covers the same net surface.
  • Sheet length and width are face dimensions for the selected product.

Rounding: Area and the exact sheet quotient retain full floating-point precision; displays use up to three decimals. Only the whole-sheet count rounds upward.

Limitations

  • Does not plan sheet orientation, seams, framing support, offcut reuse, staggered joints, ceilings measured separately, curved surfaces, or specialty board placement.
  • Does not determine thickness, fire, sound, moisture, fastening, joint treatment, structural, code, transport, or safe handling requirements.

Subtract openings before applying layers and waste

Gross surface is length multiplied by height and the number of equal surfaces. Doors or other excluded areas are removed once, then the remaining area is multiplied by the whole-number layer count.

Waste is applied to layer coverage rather than gross wall area. Keeping those steps separate makes a double-layer assembly reproducible and prevents openings from being subtracted once per layer by mistake.

Panel dimensions belong to the exact product

USG product data shows gypsum panels in specific widths, lengths, and thicknesses, with availability varying by product. Enter the sheet face dimensions for the exact panel instead of assuming every sheet is 4 × 8 feet.

Face-area division cannot plan seams, framing support, staggered joints, offcut reuse, ceiling orientation, or specialty assemblies. A sheet count that is mathematically sufficient can still be unsuitable for the installation layout.

How are drywall openings handled?

What does the layer field do?

It multiplies net surface area by the whole-number number of drywall layers before the waste allowance.

Why can I change sheet dimensions?

Panel widths and lengths vary by product and market. Enter the face dimensions for the exact sheets available to you.

Does the result plan sheet orientation and seams?

No. It divides order area by sheet face area. Framing, orientation, seams, stagger rules, and offcut reuse require a separate layout.

Why are sheets rounded up?

The exact area quotient is rounded upward because a partial sheet normally is not a separate purchasable unit.
