For a small pour it is not always obvious whether buying bags of dry-mix or ordering ready-mix delivery costs less. This calculator totals both paths for the same volume using your own prices, so the decision is based on numbers rather than a guess.

The bagged-mix total is bags needed multiplied by your price per bag. The ready-mix total is material cost plus a delivery fee and, if your order falls below the supplier's stated minimum load, a short-load fee — the same logic the standalone concrete cost calculator uses.

The Concrete Bags vs Ready-Mix formula

Bags total = ceiling(volume ÷ bag yield) × price per bag · ready-mix total = (volume in yd³ × price per yd³) + delivery fee + (short-load fee if volume < minimum load)

Volume is converted to cubic feet for the bag count and to cubic yards for the ready-mix price · the short-load fee applies only when the minimum load is greater than zero and volume is below it.

Worked example

3 yd³ (81 ft³) of concrete needed, at 0.6 ft³ per bag and $5/bag, needs 135 bags for a $675 bagged-mix total. At $150/yd³ ready-mix with a $75 delivery fee and a 3 yd³ minimum (not triggered at exactly 3 yd³), the ready-mix total is $525 — $150 cheaper than bags.

Bagged concrete scales almost linearly with volume — twice the volume needs roughly twice the bags. Ready-mix has fixed costs (delivery, and a short-load fee below the supplier's minimum) that do not grow with volume, so it becomes relatively cheaper as the job gets larger.

That crossover is exactly what this calculator surfaces: for a small pour bags are frequently cheaper once a short-load fee is added to a ready-mix quote, while for a larger pour ready-mix usually wins because its fixed costs are spread across more volume.
