The Marks to Percentage formula
Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100marks obtained = the marks you scored · total marks = the maximum possible marks. For several subjects, use the sum of all obtained marks over the sum of all maximum marks.
Worked example
You scored 425 out of 500. Percentage = (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85% — which typically falls in the distinction / A grade band.
How to calculate percentage of marks
The formula is simple: divide the marks you obtained by the total marks, then multiply by 100. For 425 out of 500, that's (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%.
Across multiple subjects, sum every subject's marks and every subject's maximum, then apply the same formula to the totals — this gives your aggregate percentage, which is what most results and admissions use.
Percentage, grade and division
Many boards map percentages to divisions or grades — for example first division around 60%+, distinction around 75%+, though the exact bands differ by country, board, and school. The grade shown here is a common guide, not any single official scale.
