Estimate flooring for one or more equal rectangular rooms without hiding the subtraction or waste steps. The calculator converts the measured dimensions, subtracts any fixed area that will not receive flooring, and then applies the waste percentage you choose.

The Flooring formula
Net area = (length × width × equal areas) − excluded area · order area = net area × (1 + waste% ÷ 100) · packages = ceiling(order ft² ÷ labeled ft² per package)Dimensions and excluded area use compatible units before calculation; package coverage is entered in square feet.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft floor with no exclusions has 120 ft² of net area. Adding 10% waste gives 132 ft². At 20 ft² per package, the exact quotient is 6.6, so the purchase count is 7 packages.
Assumptions, rounding, and limitations
Assumptions
- Each counted space is an equal rectangle measured in the selected unit.
- Excluded area is a total within the gross rectangles and is removed before waste.
- Waste is a percentage of net floor area.
- Entered package coverage matches the exact product being purchased.
Rounding: Area calculations retain full floating-point precision and displays use up to three decimals. Only the purchasing count rounds upward to a whole package.
Limitations
- Does not model irregular boundaries, stairs, closets measured separately, pattern repeats, direction, plank staggering, transitions, cuts, defects, dye lots, retained spares, or installation rules.
- Does not verify stock, retailer minimums, pallet quantities, nominal versus actual dimensions, or whether excluded footprints should be floored beneath.

Keep measured area, exclusions, and waste separate
Gross floor area is length multiplied by width and the number of equal spaces. Excluded area is removed once before waste is applied, so an island or other uncovered footprint is not accidentally included in the allowance.
The waste field is deliberately editable. Room shape, plank or board direction, stagger rules, pattern matching, cuts, defects, and retained spare material can all change the appropriate amount; the calculator does not prescribe one percentage.
Use the coverage on the product you will buy
Package coverage varies by product and may reflect a manufacturer-defined nominal size, piece count, and packaging configuration. Copy the coverage from the exact product instead of treating the 20 ft² default as universal.
The exact quotient preserves the mathematical result. The whole-package result rounds upward because partial cartons normally cannot be purchased, but it does not enforce retailer minimums, full-pallet quantities, or dye-lot availability.
Frequently asked questions
▶How is flooring area calculated?
The calculator multiplies rectangular length by width and equal-area count, subtracts the entered excluded area, then adds the selected waste percentage.
▶What belongs in excluded floor area?
Include measured footprints that will not receive flooring, such as a fixed island, only when they are inside the gross rectangle and your installation plan truly excludes them.
▶What waste percentage should I use?
Use a value supported by the room layout, installation pattern, product instructions, and installer. No single percentage is correct for every material or room.
▶Why is coverage per package editable?
Box and carton coverage is product-specific. Enter the labeled coverage for the exact flooring and package available to you.
▶Why does the package count round up?
The exact order area is divided by labeled package coverage, then rounded upward because a fractional package generally is not a purchasable unit.
